TOP STORY

  • Europeon Union election results show growing split over the Union’s future
    • The big centre-right and centre-left blocs in the European Parliament have lost their combined majority amid an increase in support for liberals, the Greens and nationalists.
    • The centre-right European People’s Party remains the largest bloc, and is expected to form a pro-EU coalition.
    • When the vote counting is done, the populists are expected to get around 25 percent of the 751 seats, up from 20 percent five years ago, figures released by the European Union showed.
    • Turnout was the highest for 20 years, bucking decades of decline.
    • Far-right leaders were on track for their best Europe-wide result ever, but it was only an incremental gain over their result from 2014, suggesting that despite years of tumult, voters might not be ready to give up on the European Union, or to embrace leaders who want to weaken it from within.
    • However, with more of a voice in Parliament, populists and nationalists are expected to try to push harder on issues like controlling immigration and the budget. They are likely to try to press for more power to go to the nations rather than to a bureaucracy they consider elitist.
    • This election was also being used by Populist leaders, especially in France and Italy, to gauge the interest of the electorate back home to see how they stand there.
