In 1948, Philip Graham Publisher of the Washington Post wrote that newspapers were the first draft of history. Then along came television, which for those that were not there, served as our window to the world. Then came talk radio and talk television which altered the glass in our window from transparent to opaque, where the auditory volume of a point of view was more important than its veracity. Now, we discuss facts, but facts can only have one of two characteristics. Facts can be either true or false. There is no such thing as an alternative fact. False facts are the foundation of misinformation or dis-information campaigns. If one builds courses of action based on a foundation of false facts, they cannot by definition, succeed. Today, we see a battle between Fake News, information that is made up and propagated to achieve an end and increased censorship to protect populations from Reality. If the first casualty of war is truth, as Senator Hiriam Johnson of California said, then we must accept the fact that we are at war with ourselves and only our adversaries and peer competitors profit from this dynamic and the damage it has done, is doing and will continue to do, unless the people of this country rise above the hateful rhetoric, recognize and respect disparate points of view and the people who express them. 241 years ago our forefathers and foremothers forged a great experiment in democracy. Today we have an obligation to ensure the experiment does not fail.
