  • Syria: Kobane still volatile while US makes progress with Turkey.
    • Turkey agreed to allow the training of at least 2,000 Syrian opposition fighters on Turkish soil by American and Turkish Special Forces, as Islamic State militants came closer to capturing the Syrian city of Kobane.
    • The US cited “considerable progress” in its negotiations over Turkey’s involvement in supporting Syrian rebels and joining combat operations against the Islamic State.
    • Kurdish fighters battled against Islamic State fighters in the heart of Kobane as they continued to hold out against the militants more than a week after their assault on the small Syrian border town.
    • The situation in Kobane in northern Syria remains “dangerous” said US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, as US-led airstrikes had made progress against the militants who still occupied areas on the town’s outskirts.
